Training Programs - INSTRUMENT RATING

I N S T R U M E N T   R A T I N G - GROUP 1

The Group 1 Instrument Rating allows the pilot to fly all single and multi engine non high performance aeroplanes in Instrument Meteorological Conditions under Instrument Flight Rules. A Private Pilot Licence or a Commercial Pilot Licence can be endorsed with an instrument rating.

There are 4 groups of instrument ratings

• Group 1: Multi-Engine
• Group 2: Center line thrust
• Group 3: Single engine and
• Group 4: Helicopter.

*Prerequisite: Minimum of Private Licence

Training Overview

The IFR Rating program is separated into two related but separate paths, ground school and air instruction. Ground school will furnish you with the required background knowledge and understanding to successfully challenge the written examination while the air instruction will provide you with the skills required to succeed at the flight test.

Age

Must be a minimum of seventeen years (17) of age.

Medical Requirements

All pilots are required to have a Medical Certificate. There are four categories of medical certificates. The process of obtaining a certificate will differ depending on the category and your age. The minimum category required for the Private Pilot Licence is a Category 3; however students seeking careers as Commercial Pilots should obtain a Category 1 Medical Certificate.

The Medical examination must be performed by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner. The fee for the examination will vary with the individual examiner, but is usually between $100.00 and $150.00. This fee is not normally covered under any medical plans.

Ground School

Shall include the following subjects:

• Canadian Aviation Regulations
• Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures
• Meteorology
• Instruments
• Radio and Radar systems and
• Navigation.

Knowledge

An applicant shall have obtained a minimum of 70% on the Transport Canada's written examination Instrument Rating (INRAT).

Experience

An applicant shall have completed a minimum of:

1. 50 hours of cross-country flight as pilot-in-command in aeroplanes and
2. 40 hours of instrument time of which a maximum of 20 hours may be instrument ground time.
3. one dual cross-country flight under simulated or actual IMC conditions of a minimum of 100 nautical miles, the flight to be conducted in accordance with an IFR flight plan to include, an instrument approach to minima at two different locations.

*Instrument time and cross-country time acquired in Private or Commercial training may be included in the minimum time.

Skill

An applicant shall successfully complete a flight test in accordance with the Flight Test Standards - Instrument Rating (TP 9939E).

1. Costs are based on 35 hrs dual Instrument time.
2. Costs do not include 50 hrs required cross country time.
